PHAKAMISA PROJECT

Pinetown Methodist Church
Pinetown, just inland from Durban, South Africa

Last November our minister, Paul, was joined at Sunday morning worship service by Dawn Meeson from Worsley who introduced us to a project in South Africa called Phakamisa (pronounced Pa-ga-mee-sa – meaning ‘to lift up, to make grow’). Soon after this visit our Leadership team recommended that we should support this project and at the Glazebury Methodist Church Council meeting on 1st December 2004 it was formally agreed to do this.

Many people will remember a wonderful Circuit  meeting held at Glazebury on Friday 22nd April 2005 addressed by Glenda Howieson from Pinetown Methodist Church, Durban. Phakamisa is a ministry of Pinetown Methodist Church and provides education, practical help and support to over 14,000 orphans and their 1,000 care givers (further details can be found on their website www.phakamisa.org ).

· ITEMS NEEDED (and permitted to be imported)

School books (second hand, reasonable quality)
Exercise books, pens, pencils, etc
Gardening tools (from trowels to wheelbarrows)
Carpentry and Building tools
Wheel chairs
Sewing machines
Bicycles

We hope to send a group of people to Pinetown to learn more about the project and to give help in various practical ways. Arrangements are in hand to send up to ten people (at their own expense of around £650 each) for two weeks from 1st March 2006. Anyone wishing to join this group should contact Colin Mills or Delia Caswell as soon as possible for further details.

Sea freight takes 21 days from UK to Durban, so if we can despatch these gifts in January they should arrive just before the Glazebury team. If you have anything to offer or need further details, please contact Peter Caswell.

All readers are asked to spread the word beyond Glazebury to friends and family in other churches. Glenda would like us to send a party of ten people (because they can just fill up their minibus) and we will not be able to fill all places from Glazebury Methodists alone.
